Mudra is the ancient art of communication between the body, mind and consciousness. It is defined as a mystical gesture of the hand to focus elusive energy by symbols. Mudra is a voluntary neuro-muscular action by which Prana (life force) is controlled and directed.

The root cause of various diseases is the imbalance of one of the five elements in the body - earth, water, air, fire and ether. There is a tremendous flow of energy in the hands and each finger represents one of the elements. The science of Mudras is based on the principle of balancing these elements in the body.

One need not devote a special time to perform it; the maximum benefit is by doing it in sitting posture, especially in sukhasana (easy pose), vajrasana or padmasana.
